KMG International employees in Bucharest mobilized to donate blood on July 18, as part of a campaign developed in partnership with the National Blood Transfusion Institute. The donated blood will be used in hospitals across the country to save patients undergoing surgery, oncological treatment or who require blood products.

”Since 2009, when KazMunayGas became the sole shareholder of Rompetrol, social responsibility and sustainable business and community have been our priorities and we have invested in projects which required urgent funding - healthcare, environment, education. Our employees are both initiators and ambassadors of the projects developed by the company nationwide. Over the years, more than 3,000 of our colleagues have donated their time and effort to support various causes developed in partnership with the civil sector in the benefit of the community,” said Mihaela Ungar, Chief Officer CEO Block - KMG International.

KMG International Group has over 5.000 employees in Romania and since 2009, the Group has invested over USD 8 million in community development projects in the country, reaching 300,000 direct beneficiaries. Its investments in the healthcare sector, one of the main strategic directions of the Group, targeted ward rehabilitations and provision of medical equipment to over 60 medical facilities nationwide.

Recently, KMG International has purchased and donated to the National Blood Transfusion Institute two plasma coolers in line with European norms and standards, as well as technical and medical furniture for laboratories.

”Blood is priceless living tissue, which cannot be replaced by a laboratory product and therefore we, humans, have to understand this and donate blood for hospital patients. The Blood Transfusion Center in Bucharest provides daily blood supplies to hospitals in Bucharest and Ilfov county, and given the increasing demand it is becoming more and more difficult to ensure the optimum amount. After the fire at Colectiv Club we have realized that we need more than that, namely a blood  bank for special situations, which is hard to achieve under normal storage conditions. That is why Rompetrolţs support in this campaign and the purchase of storage equipment is very important! Thank you on behalf of hospital patients”- said Dr. Doina Goşa, director of the National Blood Transfusion Institute.

A single unit of donated blood can save up to 3 lives. However, only 10% of those eligible do donate, according to the World Health Organization. Romania has the second lowest number of blood donors, ahead of Albania. Statistically, there are 1.7% donors in the country, while Denmark has the highest number of voluntary donors - 10% of the population (according to a report by the Regional Development Center for Blood Safety).
