The Rompetrol Group, through Midia Marine Terminal (MMT), has reached this month a level of 10 million tons of crude oil unloaded through the maritime terminal and later processed by Petromidia Refinery. This quantity refers to the period February 2009 - May 2012, after The Group has completed, at the end of 2008, the investment of over 150 millions USD for the building of the first maritime terminal in the Black Sea.

“By creating a direct link between the terminal and the tanks park of the refinery, the crude oil supply process was optimized and the unloading time, technological losses and related costs were significantly reduced. Its maximum transfer capacity is of 24 million tons/year and this can cover the crude oil needs of Romanian refineries, as well as support Romania’s position as an energetic hub – the gateway between Eastern resources and Western Europe’s needs”, Ioan Taus, General Manager of Midia Marine Terminal, stated.

The quantity of 10 million tons crude oil was reached after unloading the oil tanker NS Concord (capacity: 106,000 tdw*), which made the connection between Midia and Novorossiysk port in Russia. KazMunayGas, the sole shareholder of The Rompetrol Group, is a shareholder in Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC)**, the operator of the crude oil transport pipeline between the reserves in Western Kazakhstan and the Black Sea port - Novorossiysk Russia (length - 1510 km, transit capacity – 28.2 million tons per year).

Located at approximately 8.6 kilometers out in the Black Sea, the oil terminal can receive ships of up to 160,000 tdw, crude oil loading/unloading operations being carried out through an underwater and land pipeline between the docking floating platform and the tanks parked at Petromidia Refinery. Operations through the terminal shorten distances by approximately 33 kilometers as compared to the route through Constanţa port, and fosters the achievement of reductions of at least 4-5 USD/ton in terms of crude oil supply costs.

In order to sustain the program for increasing processing capacities of Petromidia Refinery to 5 millions tons of raw materials, Midia Marine Terminal has recently carried out works for sweeping docks in Midia port, the value of such investment amounting to 2.8 million USD. This operation will allow the mooring at the docks operated by the company of maritime ships with a capacity exceeding 10,000 tdw* and of tanker barges of maximum 2,000 tdw.

Between 2009 -2012, 123 ships were operated through the terminal, and 1,168 more ships transited the 7 docks of Midia port operated by Rompetrol Rafinare. Rompetrol Rafinare - Petromidia Năvodari refinery processed, in the period 2001-2011, a quantity of 27 million tons of raw materials, out of which 25.3 million tons of crude oil. For this year, its goals are to complete the program for extending capacities and process 4.64 million tons of raw materials (4.39 million tons crude oil).

As of the privatization of Petromidia Refinery, in 2001, The Rompetrol Group has allotted, to date, approximately 1.1 billion USD for the performance of technological and environmental investments, the projects being carried out in conditions of maximum technological and environmental protection efficiency, as per the international norms in force (IPPC – Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control European Directive).
