KMG International, through its member companies Rominserv and Rompetrol Gas, continues to support in 2016 – 2017 the medical emergency interventions of SMURD, at national level. Through this partnership, the Group donates to the Emergency and ICU unit of Floreasca Emergency Hospital, an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation device (ECMO), as well as uniforms for SMURD medical volunteers.

“We understand the needs of the public health system and we believe in our social duty to contribute to the country’s development and provide quality care to patients. This initiative comes as a continuation of our commitment taken back in 2009, when we launched the grants for medical projects, with investments exceeding $ 5 million, as well as our efforts in keeping high health & safety standards for our employees” - says Cătălin Dumitru, Senior Vice-President of KMG International.

“Through this responsible partnership, developed with Rompetrol since 2009, we have managed to support aero-medical activity carried out by SMURD, through the General Inspectorate of Aviation. We will continue this cooperation for the development of vital projects, through which we can provide the necessary logistical support for the work carried out by the emergency medical service SMURD, in order to be able to save all the patients, that are in critical medical conditions, who require highly qualified medical assistance, at the highest professional standards.” – Dr. Raed Arafat.

This partnership continues the agreement signed in 2009, up to 2015, through which Rompetrol Rafinare provided Jet fuel for medical helicopters operated by the Inspectorate for Aviation and the Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication (SMURD), facilitating the transportation and lifesaving of 5808 injured people, and registering 10,347 flight hours.

The ECMO equipment ensuring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation will be utilized to provide cardiac and respiratory support to patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit, as well as during their transportation by SMURD teams. At the country level, there are just a few ECMO devices in the health system, the price of a single one amounting to around EUR 55,000. The mobile equipment donated by Rompetrol is the first of its kind in the national health system, being used in emergency transportation of patients.

At the same time, Rompetrol Gas brings its contribution in buying uniforms for medical volunteers (over 750 at national level), their role being instrumental in ensuring the first-aid provided to those injured in road accidents.

This year, KMG International acquired and donated to the National Institute of Blood Transfusion two plasma freezers, which are in accordance with the current required European standards, as well as medical equipment for laboratories.

KMG International Group invested over USD 8 million in community development projects in the country over the past years, with an overall 300,000 beneficiaries. The investments in the health sector, one of the strategic directions of the Group, targeted rehabilitation of units and endowment with medical devices of more than 60 hospitals in the country. In 2013, Marie Curie Hospital received funds to implement – for the first time in Romania – the ECMO technique (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for the neonatal patients who suffered severe respiratory and cardiac disease and were not responding to standard reanimation methods.
