Rompetrol, in partnership with the EcoAssist Association, through Plantăm fapte bine în România, has continued in 2022 the afforestation actions at the level of Prahova county, on the former landfill of Ploieşti. Last year the company planted on a surface of over 5 hectares in Măneşti and Blejoi communes, but also in the city of Ploieşti.
“We have a long-term commitment to increase the forest areas, as part of the Group's strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change, through various types of investments. This is the first volunteering activity after two pandemic years and we are happy we have planted over 7500 trees, thus creating a green oasis near the heavy traffic of the national road” - Iskander Abdibaitov, Chief Corporate Development Officer.
Land afforestation and forests care play an important role in absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, reducing soil erosion, increasing water retention in the soil, and conserving flora and fauna species. The trees planted on a plot of land belonging to the City Hall of Ploieşti were selected according to the properties of the soil (nettletree, field mapple, common dogwood, rosehip, hawthorn), and at maturity they will absorb about 50 tons of CO2 per year.
This campaign contributes to supporting three objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda: Climate Action (13), Life on Earth (15) and Partnerships for the Goals (17).
Recently, the company completed the works on 4 play and leisure areas for children in the city, in partnership with Ploieşti City Hall. Rompetrol also supported the Ploieşti County Hospital with beds and medical equipment for the intensive care unit. The value of investments in community projects last year in the county exceeded 1.5 million lei, a similar amount being also allocated for 2022.
In Prahova County Rompetrol operates the Vega Refinery, the longest operational local unit, with in use for over 110 years, which has evolved from a classic oil refining unit into a producer and supplier of niche products obtained exclusively from semi-finished materials delivered by to the Petromidia refinery, and 8 fuel distribution stations, offering 600 jobs.
